The Tale of Two Americas

It is the best of Times,
Americans are resilient. A broad majority understands the importance of our democracy. We
stand firm against the abuses of power by this administration.
It is the worst of Times,
People feel uneasy about today, tomorrow, and the future. Being a parent is more challenging
now. Children ask questions about what’s happening in our country. Who is ICE? Is ICE coming
to our neighborhood? Are we going to be okay? It’s difficult to answer because each day brings
new issues. Our children want to feel safe in their community. Some of their friends are
immigrants.

It is the age of Wisdom,
The first settlers worked hard to free themselves from authoritarian rule and establish a nation
ruled by the people. Every American is either indigenous or has immigrant roots.

It is the age of Foolishness,
Some immigrants are in America illegally. Some came as children with their
undocumented parents. Others snuck across the Mexico border without papers. Some stayed past
their visa expiration dates. Immigrants without criminal records are needed to work in America.
They enrich our lives with their cultures and contributions. They pay taxes!
Whether they arrived last week or twenty years ago, immigrants and sometimes U.S.
citizens are held in detention centers for weeks or months without access to lawyers or family.
ICE has overstepped reasonable boundaries. It is the epoch of Belief,
Most Americans believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity — having a place to
live, enough food for their families, and access to healthcare. We want to trust that our elected
officials will prioritize these issues.

It is the epoch of Credulity,
Leaders in the current administration are focusing on increasing their own wealth, deporting
immigrants, and threatening the institutions and history on which our children and we depend.
Despite this, a third of the country’s voters support these leaders.

It is the season of Light,
Democracy is a system of government in which the power belongs to the people. We, the people,
choose leaders who support this democracy. The Polls show that most people want honesty from
their leaders, safety in their communities, and food on their tables.

It is the season of Darkness,
Our lives are dominated by decisions in Washington, DC. Parents used to discuss their children,
travels, and pets; now it’s all about the decisions in DC. Some carry their passports just in case
they need to prove their US citizenship. Some don’t leave their homes.

It is the spring of Hope,
Most Americans reject authoritarianism and are voting for democracy this year.

It is the winter of Despair,
We are in a war now against Iran that most Americans don’t understand. We don’t know what
we’re fighting for. We’ve been here before: Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq.
*
Americans are strong! We are protesting in the streets! We are sending postcards to voters. We
are writing letters to and calling our congressional representatives and senators. We are
supporting crucial campaigns in the 2026 elections. We are aware and taking action!
