Letter to the Editor: Daily News Newburyport A friend called from Winchester today. She said, “I was having my morning coffee when planes flew overhead. I turned on the news, and the world was on fire. I thought it was 911!” In some ways, the world was on fire. Iran had set two oil tankers ablaze in Iraqi waters near Khor al Zubair. It was all over the news. For those who remember, Country Joe McDonald was one of the stars at Woodstock in 1969. His Vietnam song makes me think of today. “And it’s 1, 2, 3 what are we fightin’ for? Don’t ask me I don’t give a damn, the next stop is Vietnam.” “And it’s 5, 6, 7 open up the pearly gates. Well there aint no time to wonder why…WHOPEE, we’re all gunna die.” What are we fighting for now? Apparently, no one has a clear answer, except that the President was emboldened to attack Iran after his “easy victory” in Venezuela. The idea of an immediate threat doesn’t add up; if it did, why haven’t we attacked North Korea, which has nuclear weapons and ICBMs capable of reaching the United States? People are anxious for a reason. The president initiated this war without Congress's approval. This let him avoid the question, “Why should we attack Iran?” According to Pentagon briefings, $11.3 billion has been spent in the first six days of bombing Iran. We must stop a war begun by one man. Thousands of people have been killed since February 28th, including seven Americans and over 100 young schoolgirls. People are anxious for a reason.
